要提升企業的獲利能力（profitability）有兩大方向。一是「開源」，也就是提高市場佔有率，或是找到新的市場機會；二是「節流」，從降低成本著手。

台灣企業甚至是整個產業的走向，總是「節流」有餘、「開源」不足。控制成本帶來的好處與壞處，全球個人電腦產業過去10年的發展，已經給我們很明確的答案。

若不是因為台灣電腦廠商優異的成本控制、供應鏈整合、精實化生產等努力，全球個人電腦的普及率不會有今日的榮景。然而當製造業的舞台已經從台灣轉移到中國及東南亞國家，甚至如今已經由中國南方再到中國北方，台灣重新站起來、重新找到舞台的機會，就是把企業管理的焦點從「內部」移轉到「外部」，從「節流」移轉到「開源」。

我們都知道要開源（擴大市場、提高銷售成績），「行銷」扮演關鍵的角色。然而，企業做不好行銷，可能來自一些傳統的盲點。

首先，許多企業經營者誤把「行銷」和刊登廣告、宣傳活動畫上等號。於是那些處於產業較上游的原物料、B2B廠商，認為自己「不需要」做行銷；而在市場第一線與消費者直接接觸的公司，又狹隘的以廣告和活動的成效，以及對銷售的直接影響來看待行銷這件事。事實上，廣告和活動只是行銷計畫的一小部分，它們並不是全部。

其次，還沒有擺脫「工廠導向」的企業，熟悉的領域停留在公司內部以及少數的關鍵客戶，但是對整個產業環境的了解不多。這樣封閉式的思考和決策模式，在變化愈來越快速的環境將會極度危險。未來行銷的主流是策略聯盟的形成、利害關係人群體的擴大，「閉關學習」的企業很難參與其中，隨時可能面臨被淘汰的危險。擴大我們的知識範圍、深入了解不同領域，才有辦法成為好的「整合行銷者」。

我的第三點觀察，也算是對傳統填鴨式教育的一種批評，那就是學校總是告訴我們要「說什麼」（表達的內容），但是很少提醒我們要「怎麼說」（表達的方式）。行銷就是和目標族群的一種溝通，表達的方式將會決定訊息能不能有效的傳遞給聽者，可惜我們少有機會瞭解到它的重要性。
